Romanovs are a highly prolific breed from Russia. Instead of averaging the normal 1-2 lambs per pregnancy, they average 3-4 lambs per pregnancy. In North America, the largest litter was 7 live lambs and the breed's world record is a litter of nine lambs. Their meat is known for its tenderness and delicate flavor. Their meat is excellent in any beef and lamb recipe.
Dairy sheep were bred to produce enough milk for their babies and extra to contribute extra milk for their owners. Our dairy sheep are mostly East Friesian with some Lacaune genetics mixed in to increase the milk production and hardiness of the animals.
We have crossed the dairy sheep and Romanovs to get the best of both worlds and so far the yearlings are showing what the cross can do! Many delivered unassisted, have strong maternal instincts and have plenty of milk to feed their lambs. They also show an increased prolificacy with a number of them delivering twin lambs at one year old. Some of them also have very nice, hand-milkable udders even as yearlings.
